How to take care of a new Vespa scooter
May 12, 2020

... aaand you bought Vespa, congrats!

But now what?

Vespa requires a lot of care, not because it is fragile, quite the opposite: Metal body, aluminum rim, soft and long-lasting amortization, a three-valve engine. Vespa is everything but fragile, but just as a good horse or a good car, it needs a good care. You gotta drive through Tbilisi, explore every street and corner and capture everyone’s attention! But before you do all of this, you have to read these recommendations from us: Warranty: First of all, you have two types of warranty on your Vespa engine: one year or 12 000 kilometers.  The warranty will expire either when a year has passed or when you reach 12 000 kms. If the scooter is for your personal use in the city, it is more likely that one year will pass before you cover 12 000 kilometers. During the warranty period you can use any services at Scoot Scoot only. Pay attention to Scoot Scoot plomb stickers, which are the proof that you have been using services ONLY at Scoot Scoot during this time. Break-in period:  The engine of your Vespa scooter is new and it has only been tested twice for few minutes: first time, at the factory and second time, when we got it. When the engine is new, you have to be very careful. In general most manufacturers suggest that for the first 250-700 km, you do not use full throttle and avoid high speed. It would be best, if you turn the accelerating handle only half way- which means that you will be driving 60-70 km/hour depending on which engine your Vespa has, 125cc or 150cc. Warm-up: no matter if your scooter is new or used, the engine needs to be warmed up. In the trial period, it is even more important to warm up the scooter, since it requires a lot of care as mentioned before. If your scooter has the mechanical suction, make sure you pull it out when starting the engine and wait for 1-2 minutes in summer and 4-5 in winter. Only after warm-up is it safe to  start driving. It will be helpful to turn this process into a habit and warm up the engine not only during run-in period but after as well. If your Vespa has an electric suction, just start the engine and do not start driving for 1-2 minutes in summer and 4-5 minutes in winter. After 250-700 km (break-in period), it is important to change the engine oil and then you can start the regular use of the scooter. When the warranty expires, you are free to use services anywhere you want, but remember that only Scoot Scoot has parts for your Vespa and avoid buying unofficial/unoriginal parts. Here are some other tips that you need to know: The colors: Vespa is known for having bright and distinct colors. For that reason, Vespa scooters are always noticeable in Georgia. Not only when they are new, even after few years.  These excellent colors are a result of special technology of dying the scooters, which cannot be matched in Georgia. Therefore, please try to avoid any scratches or crashing accidents. Full-Steel Body Construction: from the very beginning, year 1946 to be exact, Vespa has had monocoque full-steel body construction. This means that it will not break and wear out in few years like other plastic body constructed scooters do.  However, this comes with its disadvantages: full-steel body construction is very difficult to break down, fix, color, etc. Therefore, we ask you again not to be careless and avoid any sort of crashes and accidents as much as possible. Theft:  Do NOT leave your scooter untied during the night. The chances of being stolen in the day are much less. The thieves usually work at night. It will be the safest option to keep in the garage or a place that can be locked. (e.g private yard, porch etc.) But if you have to leave the scooter in the streets, we recommend that you tie the scooter and lock it close to a building that might have a security camera. You could also set up a security alarm system and attach it your scooter, which a lot of companies provide with cheap costs. Storing the scooter during winter If you decide to leave the scooter for a long time, especially in winter, we advise following strategies: 1) fill up the gas tank with gas, so it doesn’t get rusty. 2) take out the accumulator and store it at home. 3) cover the scooter with something to protect the filter and carburetor from dust, so you don’t have to clean them later. 4) after a long time of immobility, make sure you change the oil, run diagnostics with a  specialist, preferably by us. If you follow all of these instructions, you can be safe and free of worry. Hopefully, this is not a lot and too difficult. The main advantage of having a scooter is to make your life easier and brighter. If you follow all of these instructions, you can be safe and free of worry.
